100,000 Genomes Project – Preparing for the consent conversation

Anna was invited to design a course, including a series of 6 x short videos, to train health professionals for taking consent for the 100k Genomes Project

100,000 Genomes Project – Preparing for the consent conversation

1st December 2015

This course was designed to support the diverse range of healthcare professionals working in NHS England Genomic Medicine Centres who would be consenting patients into the 100,000 Genomes Project.

The main purpose of this course was to help healthcare professionals understand and undertake the required process for consenting eligible participants to the Project, and to highlight approaches that would help address patient concerns or questions. The course also covered some of the relevant ethical issues and provide best practice guidance on the consent process.

The course’s learning objectives were:

  • effectively prepare for the patient-clinician conversation
  • identify the needs of potential participants to enable them to engage in the consent process
  • confidently discuss the details of the Project with potential participants
  • address possible concerns or questions about the joining the Project and the possible consequences for them and their family
  • recognise when they are equipped with the knowledge they need to make an informed decision.

In addition to co-designing the course Anna wrote and executive produceed the 6 x videos that were accompanying learning aids. The videos were directed by Tim Pope and filmed at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
